Day 1 - 30 Oct

Day 1 - 3 new experiences encountered today:

It is my first experience being able to see modern Suzhou in person. Before we reached China, I saw the spectacular view from above .When we reached Pudong airport, the immigration checkpoint was packed with people, however the process of clearing immigration was quite fast as it takes about 5 minutes to clear the checkpoint. When we first came out of the airport, the temperature was about 16 degrees and it felt like being in an air conditioned room. However, I was still able to withstand the cold even though the temperature difference with Singapore was about 20 degrees. I learnt to be able to withstand the cold and I hope to learn more about the culture in Suzhou.
Second, I learnt that Google and social medias such as like Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr are banned in China which makes it hard for us as we were used to using these social media everywhere we in Singapore. When we were in China, we were not able to use social media even though there was wifi in the hotel.
Lastly I learnt to be more independent. As we grow older we have to learn to do everything by ourselves, even when our parents are not with us, thus we have to be more independent and help ourselves. It also helps us make our life easier to live through when we are older. Being independent comes in handy when we are travelling without our parents. For example, we have to do things by ourselves like packing our laundry back into the luggage, and packing our luggage without the help of parents.

Today I had plenty of new experiences, like the first time on an aeroplane, the culture in China, Suzhou and the food here. Firstly the flight was a totally new experience for me, at first I was really looking forward to the flight as I had never taken an aeroplane before and I was expecting a whole new different experience and it did not disappoint me as I enjoyed the journey there. The inflight entertainment was great and it is true that Singapore airlines provides very good service. The meal on the plane was delicious too. I will definitely not forget this experience.
Secondly, the culture in Suzhou is very different than that in Singapore, like the transport whereas the driver is on the right in Singapore and in China it is on the left and I find this very interesting. The weather here is also much colder as compared to Singapore and that’s why we need our windbreaker everywhere we go unlike in Singapore where the weather is so humid and hot, we could just wear shorts and t shirt. The food here is also very nice and similar to the “Tze Char” that we have back in Singapore.
Lastly, the accommodation is great and this is the first time I am staying in a hotel without my family but with a friend so this was a totally different and new experience for me. I also learned that in Suzhou, there are two districts; the new district and the old district. The tour guide told us that the new district is where all the skyscrapers and the businesses are. Our hotel is in the old district where there are no skyscrapers or tall building as the old district is protected. I look forward to the coming days.

Firstly, I realised that the weather in Suzhou and in Singapore is very different even though it is sunny. In Suzhou, the weather is very cold however in Singapore; the weather is quite warm, reaching to a maximum of 34 degrees. This shows that the weather is indeed very different, and accommodating to Suzhou’s weather is a difficult task to do as I have always experienced warm weather. Upon arrival in Suzhou, I felt as though I am truly out of my comfort zone and felt really uncomfortable. However, I believe that I will adapt to the environment in Suzhou soon enough.
Secondly, I experienced the feeling of being a foreigner when I was in Suzhou. As I spent most of my time in Singapore, I rarely travel overseas and have the opportunity to experience the feeling of being a foreigner in another country. It felt really different as the language used by the people in Suzhou is dominantly Chinese, however, in Singapore; the language widely spoken by the people is English. This really hit me as I felt really weird and uneasy. I hope to manage and adjust to the life of Suzhou despite feeling really weird not hearing people speak English or Singlish.
Thirdly, I have been suffering from motion sickness since young. My parents brought me overseas and within a short span of 3 hours to our destination, I vomited over 5 times and this really hindered me from ever taking a plane again. But, as I grew older, my parents asked me to go on an overseas trip with the school as they predicted that I would not suffer from motion sickness as I am older. When I boarded the plane to Suzhou, I felt rather reluctant and that I would really be a burden to my teachers and friends. But, my parents were indeed true and I managed to enjoy the ride from Singapore to Suzhou without feeling sick or experiencing any motion sickness during the flight. Thus, this comes to show that I overcame my motion sickness with the aid of medicines for it.
